What Is Considered An Electrical Emergency At Home?

An electrical emergency at home is any live hazard that can cause shock, fire, or a critical power loss and requires immediate shut-off or professional help. The most common triggers are overheating wires, short circuits, or water contacting energized parts. For smoke, active fire, or downed utility lines, evacuate and call 911 and your power company first. Our team regularly handles urgent calls in the Star area with a safety‑first approach. If a breaker trips again right after a correct reset (fully OFF, then ON), the circuit is telling you it has a fault, not that the breaker is “weak.”

Treat these as electrical emergencies:

  • Burning smell, visible smoke, or arcing/sparks from a panel, outlet, or switch.
  • Tingling/shock from an appliance, faucet, or other metal surface.
  • Breaker or main that will not reset, panel feels hot, or loud buzzing.
  • Water intrusion into outlets, switches, light fixtures, or the breaker panel.

If safe, turn off the main breaker and avoid touching affected equipment until a licensed professional inspects it.
